When I trained in IEMT, I was already a practicing hypnotherapist. I had worked with clients for several years using evidence-based hypnotherapy approaches, and I had seen results in anxiety, improvements in confidence, improved sleep, and changes in longstanding patterns of thought and behaviour. I discovered IEMT and became incredibly curious about how this modality could create such powerful change so quickly. In my own practice, I have found that adding IEMT creates much faster change for clients, especially those dealing with chronic pain or long-standing fears and phobias. Prior to learning IEMT, I would typically recommend six sessions of hypnosis for issues related to physical pain. Now, I often see results in four sessions when clients are willing to explore using IEMT.
A long-standing pattern of headaches
Larry is a middle-aged man who had lived with chronic headaches for about 25 years, which he attributed to clenching his jaw both during sleep and throughout the day. He came to me requesting hypnosis to help resolve the problem.
In his consultation and first session, we talked through everything he had already tried: doctors, dentists, massage therapy, traditional talk therapy. Most of the professionals he had seen pointed toward stress as the underlying cause. Larry disagreed. He described his life as genuinely good, and said the headaches were the one thing standing between him and feeling that everything was truly amazing.
Exploring tension and belief
After a brief demonstration of IEMT and a single session of hypnosis, Larry noticed the clenching happening less often, and that he was able to catch himself doing it and stop. He also went a full week without a headache, something that hadn't happened in years.
In the second session, we spent time exploring some of the beliefs Larry held about himself, his personality, and what he felt he needed in order to be successful. Using IEMT to trace back to the first time he could remember feeling this way, he uncovered an important belief: I need to have tension. Alongside it came a pivotal childhood memory that appeared to have shaped the idea that he needed physical tension in his body in order to think deeply and stay focused.
Bringing the approaches together
When I learned IEMT, I did not set out to build an integrated model. I simply began using both approaches because both were useful, and over time I noticed that together they created something powerful. IEMT gives me a way to address the emotional architecture underneath a presenting problem with precision and efficiency. Hypnosis then helps actively support the construction of new patterns once the old ones have been cleared. The combination means clients aren't just left in the absence of what was troubling them; they have something new to move toward.
One month later
A month after his two sessions, and after 25 years of near-daily headaches, Larry remains headache free.
