Fight Response
The fight response is characterised by an aggressive or confrontational reaction to perceived threats. It is activated by the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), which prepares the body for action by increasing heart rate, blood pressure, and adrenaline levels.
Examples:
- A person encountering a mugger may instinctively adopt a combative stance, using physical aggression to protect themselves.
- In workplace conflicts, an individual might verbally confront a colleague or superior to assert boundaries.
Personality Bias: Individuals with a primary fight bias often display assertiveness or aggressiveness in their interactions. They may have a short temper, show dominance in relationships, or respond to stress with outward expressions of anger. These individuals may excel in leadership roles but struggle with relational harmony when unchecked.
While the fight response can be a powerful mechanism for self-preservation, it may lead to negative outcomes when disproportionate to the threat, such as road rage or excessive anger. Chronic reliance on this response is often associated with heightened stress and cardiovascular strain.
Flight Response
The flight response involves avoidance or escape from a threatening situation. Like the fight response, it is driven by the SNS, enabling quick action to increase the chances of survival.

- A hiker encountering a bear may instinctively flee to avoid harm.
- A student overwhelmed by academic pressures might avoid attending classes or exams, seeking refuge in procrastination.
Personality Bias: Those with a primary flight bias often appear overly anxious or restless. They may be highly organized but tend to avoid confrontation, preferring to escape challenging situations rather than address them directly. This bias can manifest as workaholism or compulsive busyness to avoid perceived threats.
The flight response is adaptive in situations where evasion is the safest option. However, chronic activation can manifest as avoidance behaviours or anxiety disorders, impairing an individual’s ability to confront challenges effectively.
Freeze Response
The freeze response involves a state of immobility or tonic immobility in the face of overwhelming danger. This reaction is mediated by the dorsal vagal complex of the parasympathetic nervous system, often following sympathetic activation.

- A deer caught in the headlights of an oncoming car remains motionless, hoping to avoid detection.
- A trauma survivor may become paralyzed with fear during a flashback or panic attack.
Personality Bias: Individuals with a freeze bias often exhibit a tendency toward indecision, withdrawal, or dissociation. They may appear passive or unmotivated, struggling to take initiative in stressful situations. This can lead to difficulty in setting boundaries or progressing in personal or professional goals.
The freeze response is a last-resort survival strategy when neither fight nor flight is viable. However, prolonged or inappropriate activation can lead to dissociation, feelings of helplessness, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Fawn Response
The fawn response is characterized by appeasement or submission to diffuse conflict or danger. This behaviour often arises in situations where the individual perceives themselves as powerless and seeks to gain favour or safety by placating the threat.

- A child in an abusive household may attempt to please their caregiver to avoid further harm.
- An employee may overly comply with unreasonable demands from a domineering supervisor to prevent conflict.
Personality Bias: Individuals with a fawn bias often become people-pleasers, placing others' needs above their own to avoid conflict. They may struggle with assertiveness, over-apologize, and have difficulty expressing their own needs. This can lead to unhealthy codependent relationships and diminished self-worth. An adult with such a disposition may attach themselves to an abusive partner.
While the fawn response can be effective in short-term de-escalation, it often leads to unhealthy relational dynamics, such as codependency or diminished self-esteem. In therapeutic contexts, addressing the underlying fear and building assertiveness are key goals.
Neurophysiological Underpinnings
All four responses are mediated by the brain’s threat-detection systems, particularly the amygdala, hypothalamus, and prefrontal cortex. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) orchestrates the physiological changes that enable these responses:
- The sympathetic nervous system drives fight and flight behaviours by increasing arousal and energy mobilization.
- The parasympathetic nervous system mediates freeze and fawn responses by promoting conservation or submission, particularly through the dorsal vagal pathway.
Understanding the fight, flight, freeze, and fawn responses is essential in trauma-informed care. Therapeutic approaches such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Somatic Experiencing, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) aim to:
