Volunteer Information – Research Study on Spider Fear or Phobia (Adults)
Are you afraid of spiders? Would you like to explore a free and innovative therapy that may help?
We are currently seeking adult volunteers to take part in an independently run pilot study investigating the use of Integral Eye Movement Technique (IEMT) for people experiencing fear or phobia of spiders.
This is a small, independent pilot study and is not subject to ethics committee approval. It is conducted by qualified IEMT practitioners under the oversight of The Association for IEMT Practitioners. The goal is to explore how effective IEMT may be in helping adults reduce symptoms of spider-related fear or phobia.
Participation is entirely voluntary, and there is no cost or remuneration for taking part.
- Aged 18 or over
- Significant fear or phobia of spiders with a distress rating of 6 or higher on a 0–10 scale
- Never received IEMT before
- Sober, mentally competent, and no health issues that would contraindicate IEMT (a checklist will be provided)
- Willing to attend three therapy sessions (online or in-person) spaced at least one week apart
- Willing to complete short questionnaires and a follow-up phone consultation
All therapy will be provided by certified IEMT practitioners who are insured, trained in the study protocol, and members in good standing with The Association for IEMT Practitioners.
- Brief telephone/online consultation to check eligibility and answer your questions
- Three free IEMT sessions (each at least one week apart)
- Follow-up phone call four weeks after your final session
- Completing brief questionnaires on your fear symptoms (before and after sessions)
Integral Eye Movement Technique (IEMT) is a brief, change-focused intervention that uses guided eye movements to help reduce distressing emotional responses. It is commonly used to address anxiety, trauma responses, and phobias. This study focuses on a specific IEMT technique called the Kinaesthetic Pattern, which targets bodily responses associated with fear.
