When Grief Doesn’t Shift

When Grief Doesn’t Shift: A Client Case Story Using IEMT

Significant loss changes the landscape of a person’s life. There is often a clear sense of before and after. For some, even when time has passed and life appears to continue, the emotional experience remains unchanged. This case reflects how unresolved emotional imprints can maintain ongoing distress following bereavement, and how Integral Eye Movement Technique (IEMT) was used to support change.

Client Presentation

A male client sought support approximately one year after the sudden death of his wife. By his own account, he was functioning. He was managing day-to-day responsibilities and using coping strategies that had previously supported him.

However, despite this, he described feeling stuck. He expressed a clear desire to move forward, but found himself repeatedly returning to the same emotional state. Rather than a gradual integration of the loss, he experienced a persistent sense of being held in survival. He described it as being unable to fully engage with life again, despite wanting to.

Client Experience

The client did not present as unable to cope in a practical sense. Instead, his experience was characterised by:

  • ongoing emotional intensity linked to the loss
  • a sense of emotional looping
  • difficulty accessing a future-oriented perspective
  • feeling unable to move beyond a state of survival

This pattern is commonly observed when emotional responses linked to a significant event remain active, even when the individual cognitively understands the situation.

IEMT Approach

The work focused on the emotional responses associated with the loss, rather than a detailed retelling of events. Areas addressed included:

  • memories still carrying elements of shock
  • emotional overwhelm connected to the loss
  • identity states shaped by bereavement and prolonged survival
  • supporting regulation within the nervous system

The client was guided to notice how the experience presented internally, while specific eye movement patterns were used in line with the IEMT model. IEMT works by updating how emotional memories are organised, allowing the emotional response to change while the factual memory remains intact.

Outcome

Following a single session, the client reported a noticeable shift. He described feeling calmer and clearer, with a greater sense of capacity to face the future. He noted a reduction in emotional looping and an increased ability to process grief without being repeatedly pulled into the same intensity.

Although further sessions were initially considered, the client later reported that he was coping more effectively than expected. He described improved emotional stability and an increased sense of wellbeing, while continuing to maintain a meaningful connection to the memory of his wife.

Client Feedback

“After one session with Emma I felt I could face up to the issues I was struggling with. She helped me to open up and face the future. The treatment space was calming and safe. For anyone struggling with life I would thoroughly recommend a session with Emma.”

Reflection

This case highlights an important distinction.

Grief itself is not something to be removed or resolved quickly. However, when emotional responses remain fixed and repetitive over time, it may indicate that the underlying emotional imprint has not yet updated.

IEMT provides a structured approach to working with these imprints, supporting a reduction in emotional intensity and allowing individuals to engage with grief in a way that is no longer overwhelming.

Conclusion

The aim of this work is not to take away the meaning of loss. It is to reduce the intensity of emotional responses that prevent movement forward. When this shift occurs, individuals are often able to:

  • experience grief without being consumed by it
  • access greater emotional flexibility
  • reconnect with life while still honouring what has been lost

This case demonstrates how IEMT can support that transition.
