Torture exposure and the functional brain

The research paper titled "Torture exposure and the functional brain: investigating disruptions to intrinsic network connectivity using resting state fMRI" explores how torture affects brain function, specifically the connectivity within and between major brain networks.

The study involved 37 torture survivors (TS) and 62 non-torture survivors (NTS) who underwent resting-state functional MRI (fMRI) scans. Researchers focused on three key brain networks:

  1. Default Mode Network (DMN) - involved in self-referential thoughts.
  2. Salience Network (SN) - detects and filters important stimuli.
  3. Central Executive Network (CEN) - manages cognitive tasks and attention.

Key findings include:

  • Torture survivors exhibited disrupted connectivity within the left CEN, showing less low-frequency spectral power.
  • There were differences in how these networks interacted, with torture survivors showing stronger positive coupling between the left CEN and parts of the DMN, and stronger negative coupling between a lateral frontal network and the left CEN and anterior DMN compared to non-survivors.

These disruptions were not directly related to the severity of torture or dissociative symptoms. The altered connectivity patterns suggest adaptive changes in the brain of torture survivors, potentially as a coping mechanism.
