IEMT Self-Work: Navigating Emotions and Overcoming Challenges

Many people have asked about successfully performing IEMT (Integral Eye Movement Technique) on themselves. While it is possible to do IEMT self-work, it comes with its own set of challenges. In this post, we'll explore some tips for effective self-work and discuss common obstacles you might face.

Getting Started with IEMT Self-Work

  1. Start with simple memories: Choose one or two memories a day and work on them consistently. Over a year, you can integrate over 700 memories!
  2. Use visual references: When working on your own, having defined lines or shapes to focus on can be helpful. For example, look at a closet or display an infinity sign on your screen.
  3. Be cautious with identity work: While identity work can generate positive results, it's easier to manage with the help of another person.

Common Challenges and How to Overcome Them
One of the most common issues people face during self-work is losing focus or feeling the need to escape the emotion they're experiencing. This is a normal response when dealing with dominant emotions like anger, regret, sadness, or guilt.

When you find yourself wanting to escape, take note of the new feelings that arise, such as irritation or agitation. Rate the intensity and familiarity of these feelings and try to identify the first time you remember experiencing them.

Understanding Emotional Connections
As you work through your emotions, you may discover that they are interconnected. For example, you might start with guilt and then move to feeling nervous, sad, agitated, or irritated. These shifts can be related to patterns of chronicity or the three pillars model, where anxiety is connected to retrospective emotions like guilt, shame, and regret.

Mapping Your Emotional Journey
To better understand your emotional patterns, keep a record of the emotions you experience during self-work. Try to map out the connections between these emotions and notice any recurring patterns. This will help you identify the most effective ways to manage your specific emotional states and create a more efficient process for self-integration and growth.

Remember, working on yourself can be challenging, but with practice and understanding, you can develop a powerful tool for personal transformation. Be patient, stay curious, and trust the process.

I agree, Integral Eye Movement Therapy (IEMT) has been a transformative tool for many individuals seeking emotional healing and overcoming deeply ingrained negativity. By accessing and reprocessing distressing memories through guided eye movements, IEMT helps to desensitize the emotional charge associated with these memories, allowing for a more peaceful and balanced state of mind. In my journey, IEMT played a crucial role in overcoming a particularly traumatic period marked by intense negativity. The therapy sessions allowed me to revisit and reframe my worst experiences, enabling me to view them through a new, less emotionally charged lens. This shift alleviated my emotional burden and empowered me to embrace a more positive outlook on life. IEMT’s capacity to unlock and heal deep-seated emotional wounds makes it an invaluable resource for anyone grappling with the shadows of their past.

I particularly like the connections between different feelings/ emotional states that are identified. I found this to be true when working with a client and we ended up with extra feelings/ emotions that needed working on; all connected to the original issue.
